The objective of this study was to analyze the frequency of the risk factors for the ischemic stroke in a population of Recife. For that, 1,213 patients with the diagnosis of ischemic stroke were studied. The risk factors found were: hypertension (82.4%), hyperlipidemia (78.5%), physical inactivity (48.4%), smoking (46.2%), alcoholism (36.7%), cardiopathy (36.4%), diabetes (31.8%) and family history (31.8%). There were statistic differences between genders in the frequency of some of the risk factors studied: smoking (57.3% men vs. 34.1% women; p<0.001) and alcoholism (51.1% men vs. 21.3% women; p<0.0001), physical inactivity (42.7% men vs. 54.6% women; p=0.001) and hyperlipidemia (70.3% men vs. 84.6% women; p=0.003). There was a significant correlation between the degree of carotid stenosis and the patient’s age. In conclusion, risk factors related to atheromatous disease were very frequent in this studied population of ischemic stroke individuals and there are differences between genders. keywoRds: risk factors, ischemic stroke, hypertension, atherosclerosis.
