The participation of users of CAPs in the construction of their therapeutic projects and the person-centred planning

ABSTRACT
The Brazilian psychiatric reform proposes a rupture with the model of social participation of psychiatric paradigm that excludes the user from decisions, and the user’s needs become instrumental in structuring the supply of care in the new organization of mental health services. In this context, the individual therapeutic projects (PTIs) of users of Psycho-social Care Centers (CAPs) need to interact with the objective needs of these users, however, in fact, they have been usually built from the activities offered by the services. Among the possible causes of the problem are the lack of opportunities for discussion with users and families, and difficulties of the team in being willing to understand and meet the needs of users. Person-centred planning is a practical approach aimed at increasing participation of disadvantaged people in decisions that affect their lives, and despite significant international recognition it is very little used in Brazil. The approach is consistent with the principles of the psychiatric reform, and has goals very similar to those of the CAPs, as well as features well suited to the construction of PTIs. Therefore, studies should be performed on the applicability of PCP in the context of mental health services in Brazil.
