ABSTRACT
Objetives: The aim of this transversal descriptive study was to investigate the relationship between presence in nightclubs, and perceived sleep and alcohol consumption in 710 university students of both genders aged from 17 to 25 years. Methods: Yes/No type questionnaires were applied which collected information on habits. Perceived sleep was measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results: Students who frequented nightclubs reported greater sleepiness (35.0% Yes versus 27.0% ( p = 0.04); complaints of poor sleep rose in proportion to nightclub frequency (50.4% slept poorly who frequented once a week; 60.3% slept poorly who frequented once or twice a week; 69.7% slept poorly who frequented three or more times per week (p = 0.5). Data on frequenting nightclubs and alcohol consumption showed that overall, 66.6% frequented nightclubs three or more times per week and consumed alcoholic beverages three or more times per week (p = 0.001).
